When Nomad Distilling Co decided to make an eggnog during the holiday season of 2020 things looked a little different. It was a “Covid Christmas” and the PLCB had put some temporary policies in place to aide craft distilleries, breweries and wineries during the holiday season. These policies allowed for distilleries to make craft cocktails to-go. Something that previously was not allowed without going through an application process. For most businesses, the holiday season is when they are making the income to carry them through the “slow season” aka the first quarter. So the ability to make these cocktails to-go, during a year where business was not what was projected due to the pandemic, was huge. Nomad decided due timing, why not a holiday eggnog.
Eggnog may seem like an odd choice for a ‘cocktail to-go’ but you see, one of the owners Sarah became a die hard eggnog fan upon trying homemade eggnog at a holiday party years ago. For anyone who has not experienced homemade eggnog, you’re missing out. The stuff you buy in the grocery store does.not.compare! So when the call came to make eggnog, she answered. But she was not going to do it the simple way, no, she was going to make it so that the end product tasted like that homemade version not some rocket fuel with cream.
Needless to say, there were LINES of people waiting that first year for eggnog. Sarah was making batch after batch as quickly as she could but quite honestly we weren’t prepared for so many people to want it. We would post on Facebook when a new batch would be in the fridge and the next day, people would be waiting. Sarah was staying up to all hours of the night with a newborn strapped to her chest, making eggnog for the masses.
The following year we knew we needed to bring eggnog back. But we wanted to create it as an actual product, not just a to-go item. So we took the recipe Sarah was working with and scaled it, thus Naughty Nog was born. After the 2021 holiday season, we had sold out, we knew we needed to fine tune things even more to scale even larger. But anyone who has tried to take a homemade recipe and scale it for a larger audience knows that you typically lose something in the process. We didn’t want that. So we took a year and worked with different ingredients, different wholesalers, different suppliers, to create a shelf stable version of Naughty Nog that tastes as close to our original homemade version as you can get.
The end result is a Naughty Nog product that we are beyond proud of and in our opinion blows others out of the water in flavor. It’s not drowning in alcohol to hide poor ingredients. It’s rich and flavorful and one glass is never enough!
If eggnog is “not your thing” and that opinion was formed because of trying other nogs, give Naughty Nog a chance, we’d love the opportunity to impress ya!
We’ve also been told by many it can scratch an itch for lovers of the Puerto Rican holiday drink Coquito and the Mexican holiday drink Horchata. What can we say… it’s good!
So cheers to the holiday season, get out and support and drink local!
